Biography:
The British painter Antony Micallef likes to subvert pop culture in his work, which is then collected by pop-culture fixtures like Michael Stipe. ''In order to make it yours, you've almost got to drag it down and change it,'' Micallef says, ''degrade it in a sense.''
Micallef's dreamlike images, which the artist calls visual diaries, are culled from the works of old masters, fashion magazines, graffiti and Japanese cartoons alike.
