STATEMENET
Tanja milbourne is a german born artist based in Melbourne, Australia. She studied electronic media at Sydney College for the Arts, Sydney University, and continues to use a range of contemporary techniques in her photography based practice. Kimme's night time landscape photographs capture urban environments from cities including Berlin, Rotterdam, Chennai, Melbourne, Sydney and more to come.
The selected urban locations are places of character that define or are specific to a culture. The sites are on the periphery of our perception, embedded with history. Crisp and sharp - the images are dense with detail. Each object, surface and texture serves as a clue to the specific narrative of the environment.
At the same time the dramatic lighting created through the use of long exposure emphasizes the surreal and psychologically charged potential of space. Ambient light is intensified, eradicating the day's normally harsh tonal contrasts and creating a surreal, narrative and often mysterious quality. These night time landscape photographs are often presented in series, focusing on particular locations or cities. In addition Kimme may use processes such as collage, cut out and animation as tools to dissect and reassemble the original images.
Kimme has worked in Rotterdam, Melbourne and Berlin and has collaborated with artists including choreographers, installation artists, and architects.
