MAM Installs Rauschenberg In Artist’s Memory
The Miami Art Museum has installed Robert Rauschenberg’s acrylic on copper painting "Untitled" at the entrance of its plaza level galleries in memory of the artist’s passing in Captiva, Florida on May 12, 2008. "Rauschenberg was noted for his infectious enthusiasm and for his willingness to take risks and push boundaries," MAM Director Terence Riley said. "His eagerness to explore ‘the gap between art and life’ in an astonishing variety of forms and media made him among the most influential artists of our time."

Turner Prize 2008 Shortlist Announced
Tate today announced the four artists who have been shortlisted for the Turner Prize 2008. The artists are Runa Islam, Mark Leckey, Goshka Macuga and Cathy Wilkes. The Turner Prize returns to Tate Britain after it launched Liverpool’s Capital of Culture at Tate Liverpool in 2007.

UIMA Director Collinson Resigns; White Named Interim Director
Howard Creel Collinson, director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) since February 2000, has announced his resignation effective May 5. Pamela White, director of UI Pentacrest Museums -- the Natural History Museum and the Old Capitol Museum -- will serve as interim UIMA director, according to UI Executive Vice President and Provost Lola Lopes. A national search for a new UIMA director will be launched at a later date.

PMA Director Daniel E. O’Leary Retires
Daniel E. O’Leary has retired as director of the Portland Museum of Art. He has accepted the invitation of the Museum’s Board of Trustees to assume the position of Director of the Winslow Homer Studio Project. Dr. O’Leary will shift his time and efforts exclusively to this new role. Deputy Director Thomas Denenberg has been named Acting Director until a new director is hired. A search committee will be formed this summer.

Franklin Kelly Named Deputy Director And Chief Curator Of National Gallery Of Art
Earl A. Powell III, director of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, announced the appointment of Franklin Kelly as the deputy director and chief curator, effective October 1, 2008. Currently senior curator of American and British Paintings, a post he has held since 2002, Kelly will succeed Alan Shestack, who has been deputy director and chief curator of the National Gallery of Art since December 1993.

Today, a detachment of life-size terra cotta warriors unearthed near Qin's tomb invaded the United States in a decidedly more 21st century fashion: aboard a brown-tailed UPS 747-400 air freighter.

Emily Carr Institute To Receive University Status
Premier Gordon Campbell announced that the Government plans to introduce legislation this session to establish Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design as a special purpose university with the name of Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECUAD). "British Columbia’s prosperity and economic strength is closely tied to having a highly skilled workforce", said Premier Campbell. "We are delivering on our Throne Speech commitment to expand BC´s public university system and create new opportunities for higher learning."
