Works On Paper 20th Anniversary
After visiting numerous galleries over the years, in 1988 Sanford Smith noticed a trend. "Almost every gallery had a closet full of works on paper; drawings, prints,watercolors...Works that could not compete with more expensive pieces for wall space." Inspired by these often overlooked pieces, Works on Paper opened as a special showcase devoted to art on paper. At the time, no other show in the world covered such a range of material. Twenty years later, Works on Paper is still the finest show of its kind.

One Million Visitors Drawn To New Greek and Roman Galleries At The MET
The Metropolitan Museum of Art tallied the one millionth visitor to its acclaimed New Greek and Roman Galleries on February 21. In the ten months since the galleries opened (on April 20, 2007), they have attracted an average of some 3700 people per day. This is approximately 27% of the Museum’s total attendance during that same period. More than one in four visitors to the Museum viewed the new galleries.

Austin Museum Of Art Unveils Rendering For New Museum
The Austin Museum of Art unveiled a rendering for the new downtown Museum facility and multi-purpose co-development that will be built on the block it owns at Fourth and Guadalupe Streets today. Additionally, a lead gift of US$3 million from Bettye H. and William C. Nowlin for this phase of the institution’s capital campaign was announced. The new Museum building will be developed in partnership with international developer Hines and acclaimed architectural firm Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects.

NGV Announces US$10 Million Support For New Asian Art Fund
The National Gallery of Victoria announced major supporter donations of almost US$10 million for its new Asian Art Acquisition Fund. The amount includes the biggest single cash gift the NGV has received, of US$6 million. The donation, from NGV President of Trustees Allan Myers and his wife Maria, will provide a major impetus for new purchases for the NGV’s important Asian collection. The balance of almost US$4 million includes donations from the Yugilbar Foundation, NGV Trustee and Chair of Supporters of Asian Art Jason Yeap, NGV Trustee and Chair of the NGV Foundation Bruce Parncutt, and two major bequests.

Artist Charged With Manslaughter Over "Dreamspace" Disaster
Arts group Brouhaha is to be prosecuted following the death of two women in an inflatable sculpture. The Liverpool group is being prosecuted under health and safety legislations. Artist Maurice Agis (76) who created the "Dreamspace" structure has been charged with gross negligence masnlaughter.

Art Museum Of Western Virginia Will Change Its Name
Edward G. Murphy, M.D., president of the Board of Trustees of the Art Museum of Western Virginia, announced that the institution will change its name to the Taubman Museum of Art when it opens to the public in November. The institution will adopt a new logo and graphic identity as well, which will be unveiled at a later date.

Third Edition Of Art Madrid
After last year’s economic success and high-level turnout of visitors, Art Madrid 08 will have 4.500 square meters of exhibition space, 20% more than last year's. The fair will receive 80 galleries, most of them Spanish (59). Of the 21 international galleries, 6 are from South America, 4 from North America, 10 from other European countries and 1 from Korea. European participation gains distinction with the presence of 5 important Portuguese galleries.

Harn Museum Receives US$10M To Expand Asian Art Wing
University of Florida President Bernie Machen announced that Dr. and Mrs. David A. Cofrin have made a commitment of $10 million to the University of Florida to fund the addition of a wing dedicated to Asian art at the Harn Museum of Art. Construction could begin as early as next fall.

New York Gallery Sues Christie´s and Unemployed Man
Martin Lawrence Gallery from New York has sued Christie´s Auction House to recover a US$100,000 Andy Warhol painting "Dollar Sign". The 1981 artwork was stolen ten years ago from the gallery. The lawsuit asks that Jason Beltrez, who delivered the painting to Christie's, return it, but does not seek money damages. Christie's, which has agreed to hold the artwork until the correct owner is identified, is also named in the lawsuit, but "solely as a stakeholder."

Vancouver Art Gallery Acquires Two Works By Jeff Wall
The Vancouver Art Gallery has purchased two works by Vancouver's most famous artist, Jeff Wall. The acquisition of "Concrete ball", 2002, and "War game", 2007, brings to nine the number of Wall's works in the Vancouver gallery's collection. "Concrete Ball" is a 2002 photograph of a cityscape beside Andy Livingstone Park on the edge of Chinatown. "War Game" is a recent black and white photograph of some kids playing with toy guns in a vacant lot.

ART Innsbruck 08 To Focus On Photographic Art
Organiser Johanna Penz will once again be focusing on contemporary photographic art at the 12th ART International Fair for Contemporary Art INNSBRUCK, which will be held from 8 to 11 February 2008. "Although the trend towards photographic art was already quite discernible at the first fair 12 years ago, the mainstream art market always tends to lag a little behind of course in its response to new developments," explained Penz. She added that paintings and drawings would probably continue to form the most popular items at "art fairs sharing our concept and dimensions" for the foreseeable future.
