The 26th edition of artbrussels closed its doors on Monday 21 April after having welcomed 34,332 visitors, good for an increase of 9% over past years. Never before have so many professionals, collectors and art lovers from home and abroad paid a visit to artbrussels. They all agree that the 2008 edition has been a great success!

Bank of America announced a major geographic and program expansion of its acclaimed Museums on Us program, which is entering its 11th year providing free access to some of the nation's finest cultural institutions. Tate Unites UK and NY Versions Of Twombly's Painting
On the eve of the artist’s 80th birthday on 25 April 2008, Tate has announced that it will bring together, for the first time, two of Cy Twombly's great painting series from the 1990s as part of a major exhibition of his work at Tate Modern which opens on 19 June 2008. Comprising two sets of four enormous canvases, Tate will unite "The Four Seasons 1994-5" from the Tate Collection and "The Four Seasons 1993-4" from The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.

Singapore’s Newest Museum Opens: Peranakan Museum
The new Peranakan Museum, which houses the world’s finest and most comprehensive collection of Peranakan artefacts, officially opens to the public on 26 April 2008. The Museum is the first in the world to explore Peranakan cultures in the former Straits Settlements of Singapore, Malacca and Penang and their links with other Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia. The Peranakan Museum has been conceived and developed by the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), one of the national museums of Singapore.

Lost Hartley Masterwork Leads Christie's American Paintings Auction Season
Christie’s is delighted to announce the consignment for sale of Marsden Hartley’s "Lighthouse" – an American Modernist masterwork and the finest painting of its kind to be offered in a generation. An oil on canvas measuring 40 by 30 inches, and created in Berlin in 1915, "Lighthouse" is presently on exhibit for the first time in the United States. Until now, the painting had remained in Germany, where it only recently came to light after its rediscovery in an East German museum.

PIT To Loan Art To The Palazzo Delle Esposizioni Museum In Rome
Pittsburgh International Airport has agreed to loan the Alexander Calder mobile called Pittsburgh to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni museum in Rome for an exhibit they are hosting in the winter of 2009. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni museum will feature a large retrospective of the work of Alexander Calder. The curator for this exhibition is Alexander S.C. Rower, director of the Calder Foundation. The spacious interiors of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, which have been newly renovated, will provide an exceptional backdrop for celebrating the work of Calder, the 20th century’s most buoyant and ethereal of sculptors.

PNCA Announces Plans To Purchase Main Campus Building
Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) announced plans to purchase its main campus building at 1241 NW Johnson Street, which the College has been leasing since 1998 from Edith Goodman and the Goodman family. "I am delighted to announce that we will soon assume ownership of our main campus building in the Pearl District," said Tom Manley, PNCA Presiden. "The building is the heart and soul of the College, and we are grateful to the Goodman family for the opportunity to secure it for future generations of art and design students."

Lucian Freud Masterpiece To Highlight Christie's NY Sale In May
The most important work by Lucian Freud to appear at auction is among the leading highlights of Christie’s New York Post-War & Contemporary Art Evening Sale on 13 May 2008. The life-size "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping", 1995, depicts a naked Sue Tilley, a benefits supervisor from London, and is estimated between $25 million and $35 million. Appearing at auction for the first time, the work is offered from a private European collection and its estimate reflects that it may establish a new world auction record for any work by a living artist sold at auction.

The World's Largest Painting Of Pope Benedict XVI Arrives In Washington, DC
A 14 ft. portrait painting of "Pope Benedict XVI at Prayer with the Holy Theologians" from the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in NYC has arrived at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC for the pontiff's visit. The painting, "larger than life," by Texan born, Mexican-American artist Fred Villanueva, was commissioned by Christina Cox, Founder and Executive Director of the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in NYC, and set up in the main hall at the Pope John Paul II Center for the Inter-religious Dialogue event on April 17th. It will be the first and only painting His Holiness will see upon his arrival when meeting with the most important religious leaders of Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews from all over the world.

Kimbell Art Museum Acquires Masterpiece Of Dutch Flower Painting
The Kimbell Art Museum announced today the acquisition of a major painting by Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629), one of the founders of flower painting in the Netherlands. "Vase of Flowers with a Curtain", dated 1615, is one of the artist’s largest known flower paintings, measuring 43 ¼ x 29 ¼ inches (109.8 x 74.5 cm). De Gheyn never sold it and seems to have kept it in his studio as a showpiece—to demonstrate his skills in this relatively novel artistic genre.

"Tutankhamun" Exhibition To Begin U.S. Tour This Fall
"Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs," a new exhibition featuring more than 130 treasures from the tomb of the celebrated pharaoh King Tut and additional ancient sites, will begin a United States tour this fall. The premiere at the Atlanta Civic Center will be presented by the Michael C. Carlos Museum of Emory University from November 15, 2008 to May 22, 2009, followed by an engagement at the Indianapolis Children's Museum from June to October 2009.

Oskar Kokoschka At The Albertina
There has long been a need for an exhibition of the late works of Oskar Kokoschka and a corresponding new positioning. The Albertina’s show pays tribute to this important creative period, exhibiting 40 paintings and some 160 watercolours, drawings and graphic prints. More than half of the objects on view come from the holdings of the Albertina, whose collection of some 1200 of Kokoschka’s works is one of the world’s largest.
